How do I know if I need brakes, rotors or brake repair?

How often you need to replace your brake pads and rotors depends on several things.

1. The type of driving you do.  Frequent stop and go driving decreases the life of your brakes.

Signs that you may need new brake pads and rotors:

• You hear a grinding or squeaking noise when you brake.
• Your brake pedal vibrates or pulsates when you stop.
• Your brake pedal is mushy or has to be pushed to the floor before you can stop.
• Your vehicle pulls to the right or left when you press the brake pedal.
• The brake fluid warning light is illuminated on your dashboard.

Safety risks if your vehicle is showing these signs:

• Being unable to stop in time to avoid a collision.
• Losing the ability to stop your car at high speeds.

 

How we diagnose a brake repair?

• Disc Brakes: We visually inspect the brake pads, measure the rotors for proper thickness, and test the calipers to ensure they’re applying pressure evenly to the brake pads.
• Drum Brakes: We visually inspect the brake shoes, measure the drums for proper thickness and roundness, and make sure the brake hardware is working properly.
• We inspect the parking brake and parking brake cable.
• We test to ensure there are no leaks in the brake lines or hoses.
• Caliper Replacement
  The brake caliper houses your brake pads and fits around the rotor like a clamp, pressing the pads against the rotor when you brake. A brake caliber problem could cause uneven braking, making your car slide forward when you brake. Uneven braking can also cause your vehicle to slide out of control in bad weather conditions.
• Brake Hoses
  A brake hose is a tube carrying pressurized brake fluid from the master cylinder to the brakes. A crushed hose can cause a lagged or slow brake, and a leak in the hose can cause the brake, or the entire brake system, to fail. These don’t need to be replaced often, but should be replaced at the first sign of cracking or wear.
• Brake Fluid Flushes
  Brake fluid will absorb water from the air over time, causing the brake system to become less effective and the fluid to become corrosive, possibly damaging the system.
